Ham Lake | Maternity Portrait Session

There is something about the glow of a beautiful mother-to-be.  It could have been the beauty of golden-hour amidst the willow trees.  It could have been Katy’s gorgeous smile and stunning dress.  It could have been the joy Marko & Katy felt knowing they would soon meet the sweetest new member of their family.  Whatever it was, this night was incredible!  Maternity sessions are a rare opportunity for us as we have cut back on the number of portrait sessions we are able to offer, so whenever we do get to photograph an expectant couple, it is such a sweet privilege to capture this time of anticipation!

Marko is an incredibly talented photography director and it is always an honor to be able to photograph those who share our passion for the creative arts!  We had done a portrait session with them in the past and both times, he and Katy were complete naturals in front of the camera.  Their love for each other was as evident in their maternity session photos as it was in their newlyweds session!  This evening, Katy looked stunning in her floral gown and the light couldn’t have been more perfect.  We photographed this session one hour before the sun was scheduled to set.  If it is a sunny day, this is usually ideal for capturing golden hour as well as a bit of the pink glow just after the sun sets.

We typically recommend that maternity sessions take place when mothers are about 30 weeks along.  This gives the sweet baby-bump look but is still before the weeks when it becomes a bit more uncomfortable to move around, pose, or hold positions for longer lengths of time.  We also recommend wearing clothing that is neutral or classic in colors, somewhat form-fitting to accentuate the bump, and most definitely comfortable!
